International Nurses Day
In my view, nurses should and do top the list of admiration and trust in our society. Nurses provide care to mere civilians like you and I when we need it most. When (it is a “when” and not a “if”) we are unwell, the one person who is there for you is a nurse. Being a nurse is a noble profession.
Up until today, I have never cared or even considered the importance of international day of….etc. After all, we as mere civilians have come up with some real shockers:
- International doughnut day
- International hamburger day
- World emoji day
- and many many more special days to waste money and time.
International Nurses Day is a huge exception to the above.
Nurses are most important and a vital to the well being of humans and therefore to the growth of our society as a whole. World Health Organization estimates that there are more than 20.7 million nurses in the world. You don’t have to be a scientist to conclude that this number is not sufficient for a population of more than 7 billion people.
In my view, nurses should and do top the list of admiration and trust in our society. For me, any nurse is an angel in disguise. I recall a time when my Dad used to say that being a doctor is a noble profession. Well, the kind of money doctors charge these days, the noble polish is certainly wearing off. Meanwhile, nurses world wide are underpaid and over worked. Nurses provide care to mere civilians like you and I when we need it most. When (it is a “when” and not a “if”) we are unwell, the one person who is there for you is a nurse. Being a nurse is a noble profession.
Wonder why May 12th though?
If you are wondering why May 12th is International Nurses Day, well wonder no more. Today, May 12, 2020 is the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale. We have all heard of her and perhaps its a good idea to check out her wikipedia page to refresh our memory of her epic contribution to the world and the countless nurses she has inspired and millions more nurses she will continue to inspire through her legacy. It is our responsibility to ensure generations to come are aware of her contributions and are given the opportunity to get inspired to follow her footsteps. In the same light, the generations to come will be inspired by the epic dedication shown my nurses worldwide during COVID19 where they have literally put their own lives at risk to save countless more lives.
Fun fact: one of the things Florence Nightingale is famous for is the introduction of hand-washing. 200 years later, it is ironic the importance of hygiene today as we all are now washing our hands more frequently and more often.
Nurses will always hold a position of utmost respect in my eyes and as I said before, a nurse is an angel in disguise.
Every nurse out there, I thank you, I respect you and I salute you. May the force be with every nurse and you are our true heroes.
